Ingredients

- 3–4 medium-sized Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
- 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your baking dish generously with butter or cooking spray.
- Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes to about 1/8 inch thick.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the heavy cream, garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper. Stir until combined.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them. Pour half of the cream sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, cream sauce, and cheese.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Let it rest for a few moments before serving.
Notes
Make-ahead by preparing before baking and refrigerating. Adjust cooking time when baking from cold.
