Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine buttermilk, melted butter, egg, food coloring, and vanilla extract.
  4. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and spread with brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  6. Roll the dough tightly and cut into rolls.
  7. Place rolls in a greased baking dish and let rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. While baking, prepare the cream cheese frosting by mixing cream cheese and powdered sugar.
  10. Once rolls are done, let cool slightly and spread with frosting.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • Make sure the butter is not too hot when mixing with the egg to avoid cooking it.
  • These rolls can be made ahead and frozen before baking.
