Easy Homemade French Loaf Bread

  • Author: Stella

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (375 g) bread flour or all-purpose flour
  • 1¼ cups (300 ml) lukewarm water
  • 2¼ tsp (7 g) instant yeast
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add the lukewarm water and stir until a rough dough forms.
  2. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 60 to 75 minutes, until doubled.
  4. Divide into two portions and shape each into a long loaf with tapered ends.
  5. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover loosely, and rest 25 to 35 minutes until puffy.
  6. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Make 3 to 4 shallow diagonal slashes across each loaf.
  7. Bake 25 to 30 minutes until deeply golden and crisp. For extra crust, add a tray of hot water to a lower rack for steam.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
